Movies

So I've seen some movies recently in the cinema. I'll just say what I think without getting too spoilery...

300
I certainly had to see this because of its "teen boy appeal" and in this, at least, it delivered. History-wise, it was the most retarded piece of garbage ever to grace the screen (what did they do to the Ephors? huh??), although one inaccurate line cracked the hell out of me... when King Leonidas mentioned "those Athenian boy-lovers" I cracked up so hard that I nearly got booted from the cinema. I'm sorry Frank Miller/Zack Snyder, but Spartan culture pretty much revolved around raping 6-year-old boys to toughen them up and creating sexual bonds with your fellow warriors.

Gerard Butler was annoyingly wise-cracking, cocky and intensely Americanised, but he could have done a lot worse. His character's wife was pretty much boring, except for her little climax which at least inspires a "haha... word." Most of the movie was quite silly, but I do think the ending picked up slightly and you got a bit of emotion.

The fight scenes were very nice but incredibly impractical, and while the cinematography and effects (the film's main critical appeal) were very good, there were times (like one of the earlier fight scenes in which we saw slow-mo's of Gerard Butler every 2 seconds) when I couldn't stand it. I feel that I saw most of the really nice effects shots in the trailer. Some of the gore was inspired, some was plain silly.

All in all it was a very entertaining but utterly empty movie, but hardly one with more then teen boy or fanboy man appeal.
3 stars out of 5.

Disturbia
Ughhhhh. Another film with teen appeal, that I was dragged to see by teenagers. Shia LaBeouf annoyed me greatly through the first half of the movie, being some rebellious teenager and doing 'cool/funny' things. His Asian sidekick proved even more annoying, in fact possibly taking out my personal award for biggest git in cinema since Jar Jar Binks. The movie also included a natty little hottie next door, Shia LaBeouf's love interest, who was quite amusingly given some of the films most ridiculous dialogue. The Matrix's Carrie-Ann Moss co-starred as Shia LaBeouf's mother, who I really can't complain about due to her utter lack of things to do.

The serial killer next door looked like Hannibal Lecter, and certainly made the effort to sound like Hannibal Lecter, but - all things considered - was no Hannibal Lecter. In only one scene did I really feel a tension between him and one of our "heroes", and I feel I should be grateful for at least that scene. In terms of scares... well, I'm not a horror movie buff, so I will say that at times there were some tense moments and a little nerve-wracking, but nothing was really taken advantage of and nothing was truly scary.

2 stars out of 5.

Sunshine
This movie is scary and brilliant.

Everybody has been raving about 300's beautiful visuals, but damn if they aren't topped by Sunshine. The amazing use of light and darkness, of camera effects and of beautiful fire... it is amazing. The visuals make the movie worthy enough, but thankfully it is not the film's only glory.

The film was tense tense tense. Followed by scary scary scary! The whole of Sunshine should be a lesson to Disturbia, in that long before anything scary happened, I was scared! The situation, and the mood created by every aspect of the film meant that you were tense and nervous before you had undeniable reason (and they WILL give you undeniable reason). The second half was stunning, shockingly scary, one twist causing countless mutters of "oh no..."

The acting was very good, and blended into the film very nicely because the only actor I recognised was Cillian Murphy (until the credits rolled and I went "hey I do know them!"). The downside to this is that it took me longer than the introduction to separate everybody.

Some downsides were the slight difficulty in getting into the film in the beginning (which will soon be dispelled) and the slightly jarring climax and ending... it is amazing, but it threw me off for a second.

An spectacular and intense sci-fi thriller by Danny Boyle.
4 and a half stars out of 5.

So I saw the BSG season 3 finale today... amazing! It was very zany, things got wrapped up and answered, but more got opened for next season! I can't wait...

But now that I've seen the first 3 seasons, here are some of my favourite episodes...

1.07 Six Degrees of Separation
1.13 Kobol's Last Gleaming, part 2
2.10 Pegasus
2.12 Resurrection Ship, part 2
2.16 Sacrifice
2.18 Downloaded
2.20 Lay Down Your Burdens, part 2
3.01 Occupation
3.02 Precipice
3.03 Exodus, part 1
3.04 Exodus, part 2
3.05 Collaborators
3.10 The Passage
3.12 Rapture
3.17 Maelstrom
3.20 Crossroads, part 2

Best Fights

What are some of your favourite fights in your tv fandoms? Or movies, for that matter? Please reply with some of your favourites. I'm tagging all of you to reply! (and as much as I love battles of wit and competitions etc., I mean FIGHT fights).

A few that I really love...

Kara "Starbuck" Thrace vs a Number Six model (BSG Kobol's Last Gleaming part 2) -- This is such a sexy fight scene. Two hot blondes, sure, but also two of the most hardcore cool characters on tv at the time. Starbuck's so clearly outmatched but she's got fucking guts.

Buffy vs Faith (BtVS Enemies, Graduation Day part 1, This Year's Girl) -- These two fighting is just amazing. They're so deeply connected and so filled with hate, and are very closely matched.

Marines/hostages vs terrorists (BSG Sacrifice) -- Firstly Starbuck's botched attempts at defusing the situation, where she does her hardcore dive with the guns, and accidentally shoots Lee, and then the horrible climax when Sesha realises it isn't the right Sharon's body and Billy makes a hero of himself.

D'Anna Biers, Caprica-Six, Boomer-Sharon and Sam Anders (BSG Downloaded) -- Hardly a fight but the interplay is awesome. Rocks come down, Sam makes his move for the gun, Boomer tackles him to keep the peace, and D'Anna makes her move to the gun, doing the most hardcore-awesome move in history as she comes up and points the gun down at Sam (as shown in my avatar here). Then Caprica-Six, injured leg and all, rises up behind her and beats her to death with a bit of the rubble. Shit yeah.

Illyria vs Team Angel (AtS Time Bomb) -- As the chat speakers say, fucking pwnage. Boom, dead, boom, dead, boom, dead, WHAM! Dead.

UberBuffy vs Adam (BtVS Primeval) -- I actually really like this. It has some great details and filmmaking effects that make it look damn cool. I also find the generally bland Adam to be very funny in Primeval.

Buffy vs Dark Willow (BtVS Two to Go) -- I also very much enjoy this. It contains some great moves and a lot of pent up emotion over season 6 as well as previous seasons that looks very nice. However, I'll admit that the entire scene is ruined forever by the shocking line of "get off, superbitch!"

Buffy vs Ubervamps (BtVS Chosen) -- Yeah, I'm pretty neutral regarding the other Slayers fighting the Ubervamps in Chosen, but this is Buffy's finale, and she's got conviction, and it is wicked. All the obvious conventions, the little slow-mo's... the swinging of the scythe, the rising back up... and the gripping string backings make me go "ooh", even if I feel cheap for it.

Aeryn vs Harvey (Farscape, Die Me, Dichotomy) -- okay, yes, it's a space battle. But the emotions in this scene, the fact that it's John trying to regain control of his body, the fact that Aeryn is willing to kill the guy she loves to save him, not to mention the twists and turns of the beautiful ice planet setting, interlaced with Harvey's malicious wit and tactics... not to mention the outcome.

That's all I can think of right now... er... damn. I didn't include any movies, but that's okay. I want you to comment with yours.

Comment? :)

The Oscars have past and I can't say I was upset with the results. Happy there. :) Happy Feet got Best Animated Film, which I'm STOKED about because it means an Australia film won... an Australian film with penguins, no less! Best Foreign Film DIDN'T go to Pan's Labyrinth, which I'm certainly surprised about, but I haven't seen any of the nominees anyway.

Has anyone seen much of Boston Legal? Parker Posey plays a character called Marlene Stanger, nicknamed the Squid, and appears in the last few episodes of season 2 and the first episode of season 3. She's hilarious and villainous, and as it turns out, a bit of a sexual deviant with Alan Shore as well. :D

But I find her COMPLETELY kinky-hot. Especially in the first episode of season 3, she's hot as hell. In some of her season 2 episodes, she was made to look a little uglier, a little more villainous, a bit more squid-like, and she was plainly hilarious. Now she's kinky-hot and funny. Really... good on Alan Shore.

Unusual Screen Couples Vol. 1

I thought this would be a fun little idea... for some reason I felt inspired to post about unusual screen couples of note. Here's one.

Ralph Fiennes could probably get on one of these any day, with his quirks as an actor. He and Rachel Weisz had sweet counterpoint in The Constant Gardener, and I certainly didn't see the idea of him and J-Lo in Maid in Manhattan. Not to mention the extremely unusual, I-hope-not-romantic couple of him and the wildly eccentric Helena Bonham Carter, as Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange, in the next Harry Potter film.

But Ralph Fiennes is on this list for another oddity, for being one half of a couple that was unusual and scary and yet so right, even if it ended wrong.

In Red Dragon, Ralph Fiennes plays the titular villain, Francis Dolarhyde, the self-dubbed Red Dragon and the tabloid-dubbed Tooth Fairy, a formerly-abused body-building serial killer destroying families to 'evolve' himself, and Emily Watson plays Reba McClane, his blind co-worker and possible salvation who he fails to protect from his darker nature.

...'cos unusual can be cool.

Discworld??

Stolen from Jo... I've never read this "Discworld", I just felt like doing it. I suppose my result is... okay? I hope? XD

You scored as Esmerelda (Granny) Weatherwax. You are Granny Weatherwax! The most powerful witch on the Disc! You often use headology rather than actual spells, and are a very good witch, despite the fact that you sometimes wish you were a bad one. You play a mean game of Cripple Mr. Onion, and have a very powerful stare. By the way, you should really get that broom fixed…

Esmerelda (Granny) Weatherwax

63%

The Librarian

50%

Carrot Ironfounderson

50%

Death

50%

Gytha (Nanny) Ogg

44%

Lord Havelock Vetinari

44%

Rincewind

38%

Commander Samuel Vimes

25%

Cohen The Barbarian

19%

Greebo

13%

</td>

Which Discworld Character are you like (with pics)
created with QuizFarm.com

I Hate the Fanboys (like myself...)

So I went with my cousin to this store called Empire Toys today... and my fanboy side shone through like a dream. All the stuff was so USELESS and EXPENSIVE, but defying all logic I still wanted it *cries*.

There were things like a Gentlemen set piece, a "Welcome Faith" set piece, a Dark Willow set piece, busts of demons, action figures of everything, an X-Men Phoenix bust, a Gogo (from Kill Bill) action figure, a Puppet Spike, and the DVD of The Illusionist, which hasn't even come out in Australian CINEMAS yet.

The biggest disappointment was the lack of good shirts. I actually went there in hope of finding one of these mythical Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind shirts (yes I want Clementine on my chest... and I'll settle for shirt form if I must! :P ROFLMAO).

But all this damn expensive, fanboy-ish stuff... I hate myself for wanting it! :P Because I know someday I'll give in and waste my money, or someone else's money, on something that will inevitably serve no purpose and will just sit there or be put away. I haven't felt this weak since I bought the big boxed Master!

So I let myself be pulled to this big christian rock concert, with this band called Planetshakers, I think.

Anyway, the spirit of thousands of excited Christians, dancing and listening to chest-thumping christian music sucked me in at the beginning and I felt myself want to be part of them... thankfully, this subsided quickly.

As the old anecdote (that I just made up) goes... being an atheist at a christian rock concert is like having sex with a panther... if you don't fake it, you'll get mauled.

So I had "fun".
Good Old Crazy-Dreams

So here's a recount of the dream I had a couple of days ago... some of it's gone from my memory, as happens with dreams. :P

So I think there was a bit of a BSG thing going on, with like a nuclear strike on the planet. Anyway, so the ships were leaving, and most had left and we couldn't get out. There was me, my dad, President Roslin and some others, I'm sure... and we were in the chapel at my school listening to some prayer or something. Anyway, I took my dad out of the chapel and down to the foreshore of the river... because I was sure there was a ship there.

Then I used my psychic powers (yes, my psychic powers!!) to raise the ship up from the depths of the Swan River and put it up on the grass in front of the chapel. Me, dad, President Roslin and a couple of others escaped off the planet as the nuclear strike happened.

Anyway, then my dream took a perspective shift, and I was one of the people who had somehow survived the nuclear strike and were forming groups to survive on the land. So my group came up against Gaeta's group (I know... I dreamed of Gaeta... I'm worried too), and we were getting ready to get a bit conflict-y. But then there was this troll, see, in the cave near us, and we ran away from it kind of as a way to avoid fighting Gaeta's group (I think).. but we ran over a fence into this nice grassy area with a bunch of trees... and one of Gaeta's called out "no, that's the friar's area/place/land/whatever!!" And for some reason we were all rather terrified and most of my people ran back to the troll pretty quickly.

...I know, this seems to be turning sort of like a sinister Robin Hood, hm?...

But I was thinking "troll behind me, friar not really in sight" so I kinda chilled around. But then I saw the friar, and he was this scary looking guy dressed up like a reaper, with two scythes, and he was coming towards me very scary-like. Either I wasn't moving fast enough or he was going really fast, or something (look, when you're dreams are realistic, you can call me on that) and he threw a scythe at me. It kinda missed, and I grabbed it, and he threw the other one and it just missed me as well. Anyway, then he was on me and I stabbed him with both his scythes, which, if you know your slasher horrors, DOES NOTHING, and he somehow manages to grab them both and is all bearing down on me with both of them and is making ready for the stabbing.

What was funny is that even in my dream I identified an actor to my horror reaper-friar figure... Pete Postlewaithe definitely played him. Definitely. Without a doubt, and now he's just a terrifying man. :P

So really, when you get down to it, it was not the best dream to possibly have. But I think a lot could be inferred from a dream like this... like an inherent fear of religious men, especially played by Pete Postlewaithe... and the potential mother-issues of having my dad and President Roslin... not to mention the perspective shift between the two versions of me, one who had telekinetic powers and saved President Roslin from nuclear holocaust, and the other who avoided conflict from Gaeta (of all people) and got brutally murdered by a grim-reaper-religious-man after very ineffectually trying to defend himself.

What the fuck!!

So the Golden Globes is over, and it was a great night to watch on TV.

Disappointments:
Jack Nicholson not receiving Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.
Volver not receiving Best Foreign Language Film.
Ellen Pompeo not receiving Best Actress in a TV Series - Drama.
Katherine Heigl not receiving Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series, Miniseries or Movie.
Lack of Australian wins... even if I was more for other actresses in Toni Collette's and Cate Blanchett's categories, I still hope for Australian wins. The biggest disappointment was our Happy Feet not taking out Best Animated Film.
Battlestar Galactica is seemingly "too sc-fi" to ever be nominated, or something.

Middle-Ground:
Little Miss Sunshine not winning Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy... but I was still very happy that Dreamgirls got it, makes me want to see it more.
Helen Mirren winning Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama... I knew she would win but I always hold out hope for Kate Winslet winning more awards.
Jennifer Hudson winning Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture... I was going for her, but I like seeing Cate Blanchett win things.

The Happy's:
Forest Whitaker winning Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama... solidifies my need to see my film and good on the guy... sounds like a great role and he is like a big awesome teddy bear!
Sacha Baron Cohen winning Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy.
Meryl Streep winning Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy.
Hugh Laurie winning Best Actor in a TV Series - Drama.
Grey's Anatomy winning Best TV Series - Drama.

Leo DiCaprio Rant and the Golden Globes

Okay, firstly, how do you get nominated for two Golden Globes in the same category? That like doubles your chances! Couldn't the Globe nominators pick between Leo in The Departed and Leo in Blood Diamond? And you know what... this goes for Clint Eastwood as well, with his two-sides-of-the-same-story movie double... like I said, both Leo and Clint have doubled chances by being nominated twice in the same category.

While I'm on the subject of Leo DiCaprio, I read recently that his performance in Blood Diamond is the turning point of his career, or something really big for him, or whatever. Let me just say how many times I've heard that, or heard that implied, about Leo DiCaprio. First he had his Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his first major role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape?. Then he got the role of Romeo in Baz Luhrrman's Romeo + Juliet. Then he got the lead in the biggest grossing movie of all time, Titanic. Then he had his lead in Catch Me If You Can. Then he had his Best Actor Oscar Nomination for the very long twirly The Aviator in which he played aviation mogul Howard Hughes. Now this year he's got the lead in the brilliant The Departed and the lead in Blood Diamond. Not to mention the fact that he'll be playing Theodore Roosevelt in what I think his FOURTH Martin Scorsese picture soon.

So my point is... HOW MANY FREAKING CAREER TURNING POINTS CAN ONE MAN HAVE?!!

Don't get me wrong. I like him as an actor. I appreciated his acting in all of those movies (except Blood Diamond... which I haven't seen yet...). But I had to get that out of the way.

Now that we're here, I'll go back to the original topic of the Golden Globes. Here's who I want to win. This'll be long so I'll put it under the cut. :)

Best Motion Picture: Drama
Babel
Bobby
The Departed* ~ go The Departed! I'll just say this cos I liked it, but I don't feel comfortable judging scripts I ain't seen. :P
Little Children: Todd Field, Tom Perrotta
Notes on a Scandal: Patrick Marber
The Queen: Peter Morgan

Skipping the music ones since I haven't seen any of the nominees.

Best Foreign Language Film
Apocalypto
El Laberinto del Fauno
Das Leben der Anderen
Letters from Iwo Jima
Volver* ~ Loved this movie.

Best Animated Film
Cars
Happy Feet* ~ It's Australian.
The Gilmore Girls

I was just forced to watch a Gilmore Girls episode. They talk very fast, declare love for people far too often, have huge well-structured speeches about their inner truths and feelings, and have this lesbian vibe that doesn't work for a mother and daughter. They try to be witty at a hundred miles an hour yet would probably be very lucky to make one funny the whole episode. The situations are hard to believe and silly, and Lorelai is only slightly preferable to the annoyingly named Rory. (I am a borderline believer in the school of thought that Lauren Graham can generally act)

Some of these qualities might be passed off as endearing on other shows, but having to watch all this all in one show in whatever mood I was currently in is not cool. I'm now going to watch some movie that includes stabbing, and picture squirrely Gilmore faces on the receiving end.

This has been a very, very insulting post. And I appreciate that a lot of people like Gilmore Girls. It is just REALLY not my show. O_O

Oh, and if you're wondering regarding the significance of my userpic, the woman (Aeryn) symbolises me, running and screaming after that ordeal.

I don't agree with the TEGs, but I certainly don't agree with Nikki's ham-handedness either.

So before we all get too excited about our entries that exclude certain people, or our "all out war", let me just tell that I am not a part of your TEAM. If you want to exclude people on Nikki's side from reading your entries, exclude me too. If you want to exclude TEGs from reading your entries, exclude me too. I don't want to read anything you don't want the other "team" to read.

My "team", the people I choose to support and keep track on through BWF and LJ, are Kirsi, Jo, Farah, Line, Skitty, Dana, Romain, Lhyna, Carla, Chris, Irene, Mera and Beck. And if I left someone important out, my GOD shoot me.

I really don't care whose "side" you're on. I just don't like to see you scrambling around against people you apparently don't like anymore.

Choice Villains 2006

Now that 2006 is over, I thought I might post about some of the top villains I saw in films this year. :)

10. Gregory (Chris Haywood) -- Jindabyne
For such a small role, he instilled such a sense of malice that I was tense even when he did nothing.

9. Madeleine White (Jodie Foster) -- Inside Man
She's hard to define as a villain, but she had such smirky flair that I couldn't not include her.

8. Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) -- Superman Returns

7. Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman) -- Mission: Impossible III

6. Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) -- The Devil Wears Prada
Delightful and vindictive, and made the movie.

5. Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) -- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Kudos to the man who acts with an octopus face. Gothic, creepy and brings suspense to the role.

4. Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) -- Casino Royale
Almost sympathetic, but his gaze makes you hold your breath during the poker game. Couple that with the instability and detachment during the torture scene, as well as his tears of blood.

3. The Phoenix (Famke Janssen) -- X-Men: The Last Stand
A very nuanced character who's outbursts and character struggles were the high point of the film.

2. Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) -- The Departed
A scary, scary mob boss.

1. 9/11 -- United 93
I know, what a cop-out. Not even an actor. You could say it was the terrorists in United 93, but they weren't portrayed as such, and contextually to the movie, I won't label them as such. But the day 9/11 has become a symbol of horror and misery, and the tenseness and greatness of the movie is the horror unfolding, because we know what day it is and exactly what's going to happen.

And on that subject, my top 5 movies from 2006 were... (in order of my seeing them)
The Departed, Casino Royale, Borat, United 93 and Little Miss Sunshine.
But I've surely not seen every '06 movie. ;)

Grey's Anatomy has proven incredibly addictive. It's like Desperate Housewives in that run-on, hard to stop watching aspect.

I bought season 1 and am shocked, shocked, that there are only 9 episodes. Now I want to buy season 2 and keep going (I've only watched from ep 15 onwards in season 2), but I doubt it's out yet.

How difficult it is to be me. :P
